Your 4 Year Old Child
Your 4 year old child has entered the preschool phase of growth and development and this is the upcoming task that deserves the most attention. If your child is attending a preschool or daycare they are receiving the best precursor to the school experience. As with anything else, practice and repetition is the way to make adjustments to changes in routine easier and less problematic. I often talk to parents about the importance of "foreshadowing" which is a term I talk about in more detail in my 8 Tips for Parents ebook and audio series. In the case of your 4 year old child, hopefully they will have received plenty of cues about the upcoming school environment and how this is a "normal" sequence of events they are going to experience for a long time to come. If they have older siblings to model themselves after, this becomes fairly easy and straight-forward. However, even if there are no older siblings around, using other older kids that they have come in contact with through friends of the family and so forth will work just as well. I recommend plenty of visits to the local elementary school when classes are in session and kids are outside at recess to reinforce the concept that this stage of their life experience is coming up soon. I believe there is no substitute for real life exposure to what this coming attraction will entail for your child. Keep in mind the energetic influence you have on your 4 year old child, just by having certain thoughts or feelings regarding this upcoming exciting event for your child. Another aspect to keep in mind is the age reciprocal resonance impact which can be active between you and your child. This concept describes the impact of your experience when you were your child's age, and how this can influence your child now. I have described this in more detail elsewhere and particularly in my ebook called "Energy Medicine Principles for Parents". Next I want to explore the energetic priorities of this age group and how they have changed compared to their earlier experience in these past months and years.
Energetic PrioritiesRemember that your child's growth and development happens ideally according to their own schedule. We should constantly try to optimize the settings your child is using at any given time and age range. Some of the developmental milestones your 4 year old is likely
to be working on and accomplishing are delineated below.
In your 4 year old child's energy system, the distribution and priority list of categories must change over time, and this can be seen in the following graphic. If you compare this to the 3 year old example given on a previous page you will notice the changes in order and percentage of energy requirements.
![]() As you can see, the typical 4 year old is now likely to be focusing more of their efforts on becoming independent while maintaining their vital functions and continuing their growth and development. In addition, because of increasing efficiency and learning, more energy is available to accomplish those lower priority functions now than there was when the child was younger, like socialization and potty training. Now you can see why I believe the energy medicine paradigm is so useful to practitioners and parents alike. It provides us with a common language and currency to use as we describe and understand the dynamics of how your child's system is working in real life and in real time.
