Kidney Energy and Your ChildIt is certainly true that the kidney subcircuit, which includes the kidney organs themselves and the kidney meridians or acupuncture channels, is the most important part of any child's energy system. The functions and correlations that relate to this subsystem have a dynamic influence on children of all ages. In my practice, I discuss this aspect of the kidney's contribution with every parent because it plays a pivotal role in multiple conditions and in regular growth and development. ![]() This figure shows the interdependence of your child's kidney energy system with the other three contributing circuits, the bladder, the small intestine and the heart. The surrounding topics and symptoms on the puzzle pieces represent a small fraction of the collective functions of these four organ and energy circuits according to the Chinese medicine system. From an energy perspective, these organs and channels work in concert with each other, meaning your child's underlying system will seek to balance and maintain all of the energy components in real time. For this section, we will focus in on the kidney energy subcircuit, but keep in mind there is not a distinct boundary between the kidneys, bladder, small intestine and heart meridians. They are all part of one continuous flow or loop of energy within your child's meridian and energy system.
According to the Chinese medicine system, the following functions are mostly the responsibility of your child's kidney energy circuit:
As you can see, these functions are extremely vital to the needs of a growing child. Thus, kidney energy related issues come up often in the course of a child's early, school age, and teenage years. Kidney energy related symptoms can present with many different patterns. When I am evaluating a child in my office, I pay special attention to any of these following symptoms as they come up in the history taking process. These are clues that can lead us to investigate your child's kidney energy system more closely.
In addition to historical factors, we must also take into account what is happening in the child's environment, family situation, external stressful events, and previous traumatic or fear provoking events. All of these can contribute to how your child's kidney energy is functioning at any given time and in any scenario.
A Fearful ChildLet's look at the common example of a child with a history of being fearful in certain situations like being away from home or just fearful in general. I have seen a fair number of kids who are sensitive and who become fearful of school, being away from home or away from parents. In my experience, there are usually antecedent events that have triggered this to happen, even if they are things that may have happened long ago. Because children are actively growing and developing, their energy needs are constantly increasing and the reservoir of energy which is most responsible for this is the kidney energy circuit. I believe this explains why many children develop fearfulness as a symptom. It is not because they are more fearful than other kids, it is that their energy expenditures are not balanced. If you look at the multiple energy functions your child's kidney energy is supposed to take care of, it is easy to see how an imbalance can develop. Let's say your child has had trouble with recurrent infections, maybe even some hospitalizations, and they are on chronic medications on a daily basis. This requires energy from their system, and it is the kidney energy circuit that will be most affected and called upon. In this context, you can see where more energy will be devoted to the immune system, and less will be available to counteract feelings of fear. I believe this concept is one of the most important things for parents to know and I have found it to be extremely valuable as I evaluate kids in my practice. Getting the Whole PictureKeep in mind that your child's kidney energy is not the only part to pay attention to. There are 12 major organ and meridian subcircuits in the Chinese medicine system. What I try to do in my practice, is bring together as much information as possible in order to make the best decisions. We must look outside of the conventional medical system to get the most all encompassing information. Using a method like the BodyTalk system is one way to explore this dynamic and I have found it to be very valuable in my practice. The energy medicine way of looking at kidney energy and your child is to evaluate the historical experiences that may be related to current symptoms, recognizing that the body as a system is called upon to make energy distribution decisions based on priority and the need to maintain vital functions. In addition, the potential to prevent new symptoms in the future is something I want all parents to know is possible using this energy medicine approach.
