Your Newborn Baby
All of their functions are coordinated by a complex array of energy related processes in the nervous system.
Fortunately, this requires almost no input on your part for it to function well. On the other hand, there are certain concepts you must be aware of from the very beginning.
Your job as parents is to provide a safe, nourishing, calm and protected environment so that your newborn baby can thrive and grow.
This is especially important in these first few weeks of life.
Let's discuss two of the most common and important topics for your newborn baby from an energy medicine perspective.
Giving your baby breast milk or formula is your primary job in these first few weeks.
Your newborn baby's growth and development is extremely important as he or she begins the rapid and incredible growth rate which will result in doubling their birthweight by 4 to 6 months of age, and tripling it by 1 year of age.
I always emphasize that as long as your baby is gaining weight, chances are very good that all is well, despite what behavior your newborn baby might be exhibiting at any given time.
From an energy standpoint, your attitude and feelings around feeding will have a direct impact on your baby.
What I mean is that if you are anxious or nervous about feeding your newborn baby, or if you are worried about whether or not the baby is getting enough; this will be detected, brought in, and saved by your baby's young nervous system.
How they interpret this is up to our own speculation, but I think we can surmise that the way they take in this information from you is likely to be immature and perhaps too reactive and exaggerated.
This is where the energy medicine principles come into play.
It really makes sense to pay attention to your own feelings while you are feeding or even when you are thinking about feeding, because your newborn baby's system will associate this with the feeding process itself.
One way I describe this to my own patients is to assume that your baby can pick up on your energy signals via words, thoughts and feelings, moods and attitudes.
As time goes on, your newborn baby will become used to your signals and will accept them as "normal".
Obviously, this makes your awareness of your own status in any given situation important because with time and repetition, patterns will develop in your young baby that will be hard to change in the very near future.
So try to have a relaxed, normal feeling coming from you in and around the time of feeding as this will
maximize the chances of your newborn baby associating positive feelings with the feeding process.
Sleeping patterns are highly variable in these first few weeks, and it is expected that it will take time for your baby to get into some sort of sleep schedule.
I just want to point out that early on, it is a good idea to lay the groundwork for good sleeping habits even well before your baby actually demonstrates the ability to do so.
How do you do this?
I like to recommend the energy medicine technique of reinforcing in the moment, and projecting your expectation into the future.
Your baby only knows what he or she has experienced so far. You can use this to your advantage by positively reinforcing the good sleep behavior while it's happening.
Since energy medicine principles are operating all the time, it makes no difference if you do something while the baby is asleep or awake.
If you are nearby while your baby is sleeping, take a moment to just look at him or her, and direct your attention to how calm and serene they are while engaged in sleep and possibly dreaming.
Then use your thoughts, feelings, humming, touching or visualizing to let them know through your energy system that they are doing something very good and beneficial.
You might even think about how helpful sleep is since it is well known that sleep is necessary for normal growth and development.
Another energy medicine related technique you can use is simply projecting your thoughts and visualizations into the future.
Imagine what it will be like when your baby is 6 months old and has gotten this sleep issue down pat.
What new developmental milestones will they be working on then?
How much bigger and stronger will they be then?
Will they be sleeping in their own crib by then?
By leading with your own energy system and posing these types of questions, you are providing a pathway for your baby's energy system to follow.
I recommend you try this technique from day one. The more practiced you become at it, the more your baby will follow suit.
